No doubt that Singapore is one of the most expensive cities in Asia, but that doesn’t mean that the budget traveler can’t come and enjoy its many sights and sounds. Don’t freet if you want to visit Singapore but doesn’t have so much budget to splurge. Here is Top On My List’s tips for enjoying Singapore on a budget.
If you’re planning to travel, buy tickets ahead of time. I’m sure you have heard of the “Peso Fare,” I have visited several times availing of this promo.
Accommodation comprises a large chunk of one ’s budget when traveling. So to save a bit, consider finding a hostel near Chinatown or Little India. Both places offer hostels and budget hotels with rates much lower than in the center of the city.
As soon as you land in Singapore, make sure to by an EZ-Link Card. With this prepaid transportation card, right on the metro and public buses, you only pay for the distance you actually travel instead of the flat fare you’d pay otherwise. This is a much more affordable option than the tourist card when getting around Singapore.
Dining is part of any travel experience. But instead of eating at an expensive restaurant, you might as well want to eat at hawker centers instead. It’s fun; the food options are plentiful, and the quality is excellent. Chinese food seems to be the cheapest option.
Walking around Singapore can be incredibly fun. For first time travelers, this would be great as you will have more time to marvel at the place. Just make sure to wear comfortable shoes.
Try to check often on Singapore’s Groupon page as your trip approaches. You’ll often see discounted rates for tickets to some of Singapore’s top attractions.
If you buy water, snacks or other beverages, do so at a supermarket rather than a mini-mart.
Cigarettes and alcohol are incredibly expensive in Singapore because of high taxis.
Singapore is strict laws, and you can get fined for carelessness or even for ignorance. Make sure to cross streets using designated crosswalks, don’t chew gum, wear your seat belt in taxis and don’t bring food or drinks on the metro or buses.
Most attractions in Singapore have entrance fees. So if you don’t have enough budget, you might as well choose only a few that excites you. But Singapore has free attractions too, like the Singapore City Gallery and the Singapore Art Museum (free on Friday evenings).
Some free tourist magazines can be found at the airport. Try to check for other free events or promotions going on during your stay.
