In my recent visit to Bantayan Island, Province of Cebu, one very imposing structure caught my attention and caused me to visit, the Sts. Peter and Paul Parish Church.

Saints Peter and Paul Church is one of the oldest in the Philippine and a standing historical structure in Bantayan Island, Province of Cebu, Philippines. Just like most of the oldest churches in the Philippines, the church was made of stones and corals.

Located in the center of the town across the town plaza, the skillfully crafted architecture and well-preserved antiquity of the church made it not just a hub of spiritual activities but is a tourist “must-see” destination in the Island of Bantayan.

In my visit, I have gathered 7 Facts About  Saints Peter and Paul Church  in Bantayan Island, Cebu as follows:

1. Oldest Parish in Cebu founded by the Augustinian Missionaries on June 11, 1580.
2. The original church was destroyed by the Moro raids in 1628 and 800 Bantayanons were taken as slaves by the Moro Pirates.
3. In 1711, the Moro Pirates attacked again Bantayan leaving the Church and the entire town into ashes.
4. In 1834 the present church was constructed and was completed in 1863 under the leadership of its Parish Priest Fr. Doroteo Andrada del Rosario from Iloilo.
5. The building probably the only one in the Philippines with the most relief sculptures of Saints and another symbol of the Catholic faith.
6. The parish has produced 2 Bishops, namely Archbishops John Du of Palo and Auxillary Bishop Emilio Bataclan of Cebu. It has also produced numerous priests and religious.
7. The Parish celebrates its feast every June 29, in honor of Apostles Peter and Paul.
