 Malaysia: the Limestone Hill

The splendid Batu Caves, which is just 13km away from Kuala Lumpur, is one of the tourist destinations in the country of Malaysia. Batu Caves is a hill that caters for about 400 million years old of limestones. This tourist spot is all about the Hindu religion and natural formations making all its visitors get fascinated with every corner of the place.

Aside from the limestones rock formations, there are also lots of animals to be seen while in there, from snakes, monkeys, bats, spiders, and even cockroaches.

To get here, take the KLM Komuter train at the KL Sentral station and it brings you exactly at the Batu Caves stop.
The 4 main attractions at Batu Caves are Temple / Cathedral, Dark, Villa, and Ramayana Caves.

Temple or Cathedral Cave [ Batu Caves Malaysia ]

This is the main chamber out of the four attractions on Batu Caves. There is a 42-meter gold statue guarding the cavern which is Lord Murugan (the Hindu god of war and victory) as this cavern is mainly a Hindu Temple. To reach this Temple, one needs to take the 272 steps of stairs. No entrance fee for this temple but donations will be highly appreciated.

Dark Cave [ Batu Caves Malaysia ]

“Dark” cavern is a chamber with an educational and scientific touch. It is said to have ancient animals and rare species of spiders, but usually, there are just a group of bats and cockroaches. An Educational tour that depicts the different rock formations and a more intense Adventure tour is offered in this cavern. However, the latter tour requires advance booking. This chamber is not always open and some parts are off-limits.

Cave Villa [ Batu Caves Malaysia ]

Just at the foot of Batu Caves lies the chamber called Villa. From the solemn Cathedral and the creepy Dark Cave, this third attraction is a colorful one having colored lights, and statues and paintings that are brightly painted. A part of the chamber will show a collection of reptiles and other animals. There is an entrance fee of RM15 for non-Malaysians residents.

Ramayana Cave [ Batu Caves Malaysia ]

A 15-meter green statue of the monkey god, Hanuman guards the entrance of the chamber of  Ramayana. The cavern depicts scenes and statues from Ramayana (ancient Indian epic poem). Just like the  Villa, this chamber is also a colorful one. There is an entrance fee of RM5 when entering the cavern.

If you wished to witness the annual celebration of the Hindu at this place, try to visit from January to February. Thousands of worshippers are doing some strange ceremony like piercing the skin, mouth, and tongue with skewers and hook. Though strange as it may seem, many visitors are actually visiting during this season to witness the said ceremony.

If you get hungry after the tour, you can eat at the vegetarian restaurants (that serves Indian dishes) in the area. Batu Caves are open daily from 7 am to 8 pm. Do take note that this place is a sacred one so short skirts, short shorts, and hot pants are not allowed.
