If you are still in Japan by November, you can enjoy the first illuminations that light up the night. The Kochia Carnival is a favorite autumn event in Japan which can be found on Mirahashi Hill at the Hitachi Seaside Park. Kochia is red in autumn, and it grows as bushes. The picturesque autumn scenery can be enjoyed from mid-September to mid-October.

Throughout autumn, some festivals take place in different places just to celebrate the season. One of the best autumn festivals can be found in the avenue of Meiji Jingu Gaien where two lanes of ginkgo trees are lined up in 300 meters. Walking under those yellow trees with the sun high up in the sky or even at the illuminated night will make you feel like you are walking between golden-leaved trees. The festival yearly occurs in the middle of November up to early December.

You should try their chestnuts, Matsutake mushrooms, Kaki (Japanese persimmons), Yakiimo (Sweet Potato), grilled Sanma (Pacific saury), Oden, Kabocha Korokke (pumpkin croquette), ginkgo nuts, and don’t forget to try their sake.

10. Autumn Hiking
Going out for a hike is one of the best activities to do during the season. If you are in Tokyo, check out the different places you can hike like Mount Mitake, Mount Takao, Mount Oyama, and Hakone. The prefectures of Nagano and Hokkaido also offer great mountains where you can go hiking as well. And if you are just in time for the start of the season, you can hike Mount Fuji. Early July until mid-September is the official climbing season of the high mountain.
