Siquijor might be one of the places that get a little attention when it comes to the tourists’ spots. But, to let you know, this province has a lot of scenic places to offer. One of these are the available century-old churches! Let’s get to know these spots one by one in this article.

  1.    Church of St.Francis of Assisi

Located at the capital town of Siquijor and just a few blocks from the port, this church was built from 1795 and was completed way back in the year 1831. With its structure made up of corals tones for the bricks and walls and originally cogon and was replaced by a tin roof, this place is indeed picturesque at the middle of the town. What makes it even more famous is that it has the signage of “Welcome to Siquijor” marker in front of the church. So, you might as well take a photo in front of that.

  1.    Lazi Church and Convent

This church is dedicated to St.Isidore Labrador and was built at around 1884. As a Baroque church, it is now being targeted to become part of the UNESCO’s list of World Heritage. As you enter the street from this church, you will be welcomed by big and old acacia trees which are said to be as early as the church. It is built using the materials of coral stones with intricately designed structure matched with a wooden floor and a steel ceiling.

Just across the church is the Lazi Convent, this biggest convent in the country was way than a comfortable haven of the friars whenever they get to visit the church. Now, it is considered as the house of priests. It is like a traditional “Bahay na Bato,” a stone-built on the ground floor and made up of wood on the second floor. All in all, the National Historical Institute declared both the church and the convent as National Historic Landmarks.

  1.    Sta Maria Church

A church located in the town of Maria is a church built in 1880 and is dedicated to Nuestra Senora de Providencia, or also known as Our Lady of Divine Providence. Well, the different of this church to other churches in the town is that it humbler looking in a way that it is much simpler. Inside, it has an image of Sta. Rita de Cascia dressed like the Virgin Mary. It is holding a small skull along with an inverted crucifix. With the church’s simplicity, you would surely find peace and solace here.

These are just examples of churches which you may visit in the beautiful place of Siquijor. It does not mean that you have to be a believer to do this exploration.
