Immune System Booster Foods

In the midst of the COVID19 pandemic, everyone is advised to stay healthy and to strengthen their immune system by social distancing, sanitizing, having enough rest, and eating healthy foods. The disease spared no one, regardless of age or social status.

Masks, alcohol, and even Vitamin C are running out of stock. But in the absence of commercially available supplements and vitamins, we can surely keep our body healthy by ensuring that what we are eating is nutritious and would benefit our body and strengthen our immune system. They may not shield you from the flu or COVID19, but they’ll give you a “fighting chance.”

Foods Known To be immune System Booster

Immune System Booster Foods

Citrus Fruits

One of the first vitamins given to children is vitamin C. Its main role is to strengthen our immune system. Even as adults, we never forget to take a dose of it every day. As our body cannot produce it, we turn to citrus fruits like oranges, grapefruits, and lemons for our vitamin C. However, it is better to consume the fruit itself rather than just drinking the juice as the squeezing process tends to reduce nutritional content.

Immune System Booster Foods

Red bell peppers

It may be spicy, but it’s good for you so open up. Unknown to most people, red bell peppers contain more vitamin C than citrus fruits and even some supplements. They also have vitamin A for healthy eyes and skin. In addition to the health benefits, consuming the fruit will help you to lose weight. As with all peppers, they increase body temperature along with metabolism rate. Unlike some of their “relatives,” though, red bell peppers do not affect our heart and blood pressure, so consume as much as you can.

Immune System Booster Foods

Broccoli

It is the stereotypical vegetable that children do not want to eat. However, you might have to if you’re going to protect yourself from the flu. Don’t worry; broccoli is quite crunchy and delicious, contrary to popular belief. The vegetable is packed with vitamins, minerals, antioxidants, and bioactive compounds. Together, they strengthen your body against infections and diseases. Give broccoli a try; you won’t regret it. Different cooking methods may alter its nutritional content, so experts advise either steaming broccoli or consuming it raw to get the most out of this vegetable.

Immune System Booster Foods

Garlic

Garlic contains both antioxidants and vitamin C. Its fiber content ensures healthy digestion. Recent studies also show that it can reduce the effects of poisoning from heavy metal exposure (such as lead and cadmium). Although not yet proven, garlic is considered an ancient “performance-enhancing substance,” but it seems to give a quick energy boost to athletes. Although eaten raw at times, it is often used in cooking dishes. The main downside to consuming garlic, other than the bitter taste when eaten alone, is the resulting bad breath.

Immune System Booster Foods

Ginger

Ginger is known for its anti-inflammatory properties, making it perfect against arthritis or sore throat. Gingerol, the vegetable’s main compound, helps with menstrual and stomach pain as well. Chewing raw ginger is also recommended to deal with toothaches and gingivitis. You may not like it in your mouth, but your body will thank you for eating it. As mentioned, it can be either consumed raw, added as a seasoning, or grounded into bittersweet Tea.

Immune System Booster Foods

Spinach

Popeye using spinach to strengthen himself has a basis in reality. The vegetable is considered a “superfood,” filled with all the vitamins, minerals, and nutrients essential to your body. Its benefits range from providing much-needed carbohydrates for energy, healthy eyes, boosting the immune system to blood clotting. Spinach even has compounds that can slow down aging and prevent cancer. It is also one of the best vegetarian (non-meat) sources of calcium and iron. Name a healthy substance; the spinach might be able to provide you with it. The vegetable also has high fiber and is good indigestion. Just don’t expect suddenly having biceps to pound bullies with upon consumption.

Immune System Booster Foods

Yogurt

This tasty and healthy treat is produced from bacterial fermentation of milk. This so-called “good bacteria” promotes healthy digestion and boosts the immune system. Some variants are fortified with additional nutrients and vitamins, such as vitamin D, increasing their nutritional value. Being a dairy product, yogurt comes packed with calcium and protein for healthy bones and energy. Recent formulations even allow consumers to lose weight. However, those with lactose intolerance and watching their sugar intake are advised to avoid eating yogurt.

Immune System Booster Foods

Almond

This sweet nut is loaded with vitamin E and other antioxidants. Not only do they boost the immune system but slow down the aging process as well. Magnesium found in almonds regulates both blood sugar and pressure levels. Its satiating properties, thanks to fiber and protein, make it effective for appetite control and weight loss. As with most healthy foods, it is best to eat almonds raw so as not to diminish their nutritional content.

Immune System Booster Foods

Turmeric and Curcumin

Turmeric can be eaten raw but better known for its use in curry powder. These spicy roots boost brain function and memory, allowing you to keep your wits and even avoid Alzheimer’s disease. Studies even show turmeric and Curcumin can be used in anti-cancer medication or prevent cancer from happening in the first place. They also contain anti-inflammatory substances that can match even formulated medicine in efficacy.

Immune System Booster Foods

Green Tea

This healthy and soothing drink has been known to cleanse one’s body of impurities since ancient times. They help both the mind and body. Other than antioxidants, green tea also aids in proper digestion and boosting brain function. Drink up as well if you want to avoid diabetes, heart disease, and possibly live to your hundreds. Green Tea is also known for its anti-aging properties.

Immune System Booster Foods

Papaya

It is both eaten and used as an ingredient in soaps to maintain healthy skin and a youthful complexion. However, papaya helps the body in other ways too. It promotes good digestion, reduces wear and tear not only of the skin but also other organs, and has vitamin C content (even when compared to citrus fruits). Pregnant women should not eat papayas, though, as it could simulate birth pains and contractions.

Immune System Booster Foods

Kiwi

This rare fruit is loaded with all sorts of vitamins, so better stock up on it once you get the chance. As with most fruits, kiwi contains vitamin C and fiber useful for the immune and digestive systems, respectively. Other than that, antioxidants found in the fruit can also strengthen the lungs, allowing the body to exhale impurities without adverse effects. Kiwi also has vitamin K for faster healing of injuries and wounds.

Immune System Booster Foods

Poultry Meat

Like other meats, poultry is rich in iron and protein. It is the healthiest of them all due to low-fat content, making it perfect for those watching their weight. Iron boosts blood production and circulation while protein gives energy and maintains the muscles. Poultry also contains B vitamins essential for the nervous system. Consumption should still be regulated, though, as meats usually increase uric acid, a harmful substance in the kidneys.

Immune System Booster Foods

Shellfish

Like them or not, seafood is a great alternative source of protein. They also have omega-3 and vitamin B12, which strengthens the heart. Zinc boosts the immune system as well. Despite their fat content, shellfish also promotes healthy digestion and weight loss. As with all meats, too much consumption can affect the kidneys and may trigger allergies.

Immune System Booster Foods

Sunflower seeds

Who knew that so many vitamins and nutrients are packed in such a small package. In addition to being a nifty treat, sunflower seeds are mainly known for their anti-inflammatory properties and reducing blood sugar levels. They also contain phosphorus and vitamin E for the nerves and immune system. However, no matter how delicious and healthy they are, eating sunflower seeds should be limited since its cadmium content can potentially damage your organs.

Coupled with a healthy lifestyle, the foods mentioned above will help you boost your immune system. It is recommended to eat them even though you fee you are well. After all, as another saying goes – “prevention is better than cure.” It would be wiser to consume these foods than have to purchase medicine or undergo possibly expensive check-ups and procedures.
