Bacolod Masskara Festival Schedule of Events

The MassKara Festival is an extraordinary time for Bacolodnons like me. Held every October, it’s a party and a tribute to our resilience. I grew up watching the dancers with their smiling masks, colorful costumes, and infectious energy. Now, as an adult, the excitement remains the same, and I always find myself smiling along with them.

This year, the festival runs from October 11 to 27, 2024, marking its 45th year. The MassKara was born out of hardship in the 1980s when Bacolod faced economic struggles and personal losses. The smiling masks showed the world that, no matter what, Bacolodnons will keep smiling through adversity. I feel that sense of pride and hope whenever I see those masks.

My Favorite MassKara Events [ Masskara Festival Schedule of Events ]

The MassKaNamit Cookfest (October 15-17), where local chefs and home cooks showcase Bacolod’s best dishes. As a food lover, I savor everything from the famous chicken inasal to mouthwatering desserts like piaya and napoleones. It’s a delicious way to kick off the festival.

Another highlight is the MassKara Street Dance Competition on October 27. Watching performers from different barangays show off their intricate costumes and lively dance routines always brings me back to my childhood excitement. The energy on the streets is contagious, and you can feel the pride of Bacolodnons as they cheer for their favorites.

If you’re looking for a nighttime event, the Electric MassKara on October 26 transforms the city into a glowing, neon wonderland. The music, lights, and dancing make it an unforgettable experience. I remember getting lost in the crowd, feeling the beat of the music, and dancing the night away.

Exploring Bacolod Beyond the Festival

Jojo Vito Designs Gallery

While the MassKara Festival is a spectacle, there’s much more to do in Bacolod during your visit. One of my top recommendations is a trip to the Jojo Vito Designs Gallery, where the magic behind the MassKara masks comes to life. The gallery offers an array of intricately designed masks, each telling a story of Bacolod’s craftsmanship. I love how visitors can buy their piece of the festival or even join a workshop to paint a mask. There’s nothing quite like bringing home a handmade souvenir you created.

The Ruins

Another must-visit is The Ruins, just a short drive from the city. It’s often called the “Taj Mahal of Negros” and for good reason. The skeletal remains of this grand mansion are stunning, especially at sunset when the structure glows golden. Every time I visit, I’m struck by its timeless beauty, and I make sure to take photos—it’s a photographer’s dream.

Mambukal Mountain Resort

For a break from the hustle and bustle, I head to Mambukal Mountain Resort, a serene spot known for its hot springs and waterfalls. The cool mountain air and peaceful surroundings perfectly contrast the festival’s energy, and if you’re up for it, the hike to the waterfalls is well worth it. I always feel refreshed after a day spent here.

Where to Eat in Bacolod  [ Masskara Festival Schedule of Events ]

A visit to Bacolod wouldn’t be complete without indulging in our local food. The MassKara Festival brings the best of our culinary scene to the streets, with food stalls offering inasal, piaya, and more. But if you want a sit-down meal, I’d recommend trying Aida’s Manokan, one of my go-to places for chicken inasal, grilled to perfection. For something sweet, Calea offers delectable cakes that will leave you wanting more.

Tips for Enjoying Festival  [ Masskara Festival Schedule of Events ]

To make the most of your MassKara experience, plan your schedule around major events like the street dances and Electric MassKara. Trust me, it’s best to arrive early to grab a good spot. Comfortable clothes and shoes are essential since you’ll be doing a lot of walking, and don’t forget to stay hydrated—October in Bacolod can get pretty warm!

Lastly, don’t be shy about joining the street parties. One of the best things about MassKara is the community vibe. Dancing with the locals, cheering for the performers, and soaking in the atmosphere make the experience so special.

Final Thoughts

As a Bacolodnon, I find the MassKara Festival to be profoundly significant. It’s a celebration of who we are—resilient, joyful, and proud of our culture. Whether you’re here for the food, the dancing, or the art, you’ll find that Bacolod offers an experience like no other. And while the festival is the main draw, take time to explore our beautiful city, visit places like Jojo Vito Designs Gallery, The Ruins, and Mambukal Mountain Resort, and indulge in our famous dishes.

I guarantee that by the end of your trip, you’ll have a piece of Bacolod with you—not just in your souvenirs but in your heart as well.
