9 SIQUIJOR TOURIST SPOTS | THINGS TO DO | COASTAL TOUR

Siquijor is barely a small Island that offers a day coastal tour for its guests who doesn’t have much time to spend. Apart from its beautiful beaches with white sands, Siquijor offers other sites which could be of interest to its guests. Basically, the island offers a day of Coastal Tour covering almost all of its tourist sites.

Siquijor is the third smallest province in the country, population-wise as well as the land area (after Camiguin and Batanes). For a time, the Island was part of Negros Oriental. To the northwest of Siquijor are Cebu and Negros Island, to the northeast is Bohol and to the south, across the Bohol Sea, is the island of Mindanao.

During the Spanish regime in the country, the Spaniards called the island Island of Fire (Spanish: Isla del Fuego). Siquijor is commonly associated with mystic traditions that the island’s growing tourism industry capitalizes on.

Below are the things that you can do in Siquijor for a day.

Calipay Spring, Siquijor Tourist Spot 

1.CALIPAY SPRING PARK

The Calipay Spring Park is a public natural spring pool develop by the local government for the residents and it’s visitors.  The waters came from mountain springs flowing down towards the sea. The waters are gathered in cement pools as they run through the station.  Capilay Spring Park has become very popular among the locals because of its accessibility. The park also has a playground, kiosks, and booths accented with big trees that could pass on cool shades to its visitors. Entrance is free at the park.

2. ENCHANTED BALETE TREE

The more than 400 years old   Enchanted Balete Tree is located in Barangay Campalanas along the highway in the town of Lazi and has become a tourist spot for curious tourists who are visiting Siquijor Province.

While at the site you can dip your tired feet into the water and enjoy the little fishes tickling your toes. Visiting the enchanted tree is for free. The place has caretakers that maintain the cleanliness of the place and they have a Tip Box where you can give donations if you want.

3. SAN ISIDRO LABRADOR CHURCH

The San Isidro Labrador Church was declared a National Cultural Treasure by the National Museum of the Philippines. It was also nominated for the UNESCO World Heritage Tentative List since 2006 under the collective group of Baroque Churches of the Philippines (Extension) together with the churches of Boljoon, Guiuan, Loboc, and Tumauini.  The church was built of sea stones and wood. It has two pulpits and has retained its original retablo and wood flooring.

4. SAN ISIDRO LABRADOR CONVENT

Right in from the San Isidro Labrador Church is the U-shaped bahay na bato convent. This convent is said to be one of the largest convents built during the Spanish colonial era. The ground floor is stonewalled while wood panels can be found on the second floor. Its dimension is 42 meters (138 ft) by 38 meters (125 ft). It is funded by donations from parishes and missions of the Recollects. Partitions of the convent were removed but the original structure was maintained. It now houses the Siquijor Heritage Museum which has collections of important church relics and paraphernalia.

5. CAMBUGAHAY FALLS

One of the most exciting places to visit when in Siquior is Cambugahay Falls. The waterfall consists of three-tiered cascading falls with crisp and clean warm water originating from natural springs, rainwater, and watershed. Water from the Cambugahay Falls flows down about three kilometers downstream making numerous wonderful swimming lagoons before it discharges into the Lazi Bay.

When visiting the place, one must try their Tarzan swing by hanging in a vine and drop yourself into the water.

The Cambugahay Falls is situated just two kilometers outside the town of Lazi. Upon reaching the destination, you will need to walk down the one hundred thirty-five stone steps after paying the parking cost of PHP 25.00. I suppose a life/tour guide is also required when visiting the place. They don’t have a fixed rate but you can give between PHP 100 – 200 depending on your number. When traveling solo, your guide can also serve as your photographer.

6. OUR LADY OF DIVINE PROVIDENCE

Our Lady of Divine Providence is a century-old church made of Tabique. Its altar and structure were built during the Spanish administration.

7. SALAGDONG BEACH

One of the best places to visit especially for the beach lovers when in Siquijor is Salagdong Beach.  The place also has nice rock formations and nice white sand. However, because the place has a very cheap entrance of PHP 25.00, the beach is usually flooded by locals during holidays. Salagdong Beach also has a restaurant wherein you can have your lunch while doing the coastal tour. Nothing great about the food that they serve, though.

8. GUIWAHON SPRING

Guiwanon Spring Park is located at Luyang, Siquijor.  Upon entering the place, you will immediately be taking the man-made bamboo/wooden bridge which allows you to enjoy the mangroves forest that is well preserved. The beautiful place will somehow bring you to a different dimension. Surprisingly there are accommodations/cottages built on huge mangroves. Cottages can be occupied by 4 to 6 people, but it depends on how you will negotiate with the caretakers. The entrance fee is just PHP 10/person  and the rental of the cottages is only  PHP 200-250/day. But I noticed that cottages don’t have any toilets or food outlets nearby.  Then I guess the cottages are not really intended for tourists. Judging from what I saw, the cottages were perfect for friendships, courtships and for people that need to have their own private moments.

9. ST. FRANCIS OF ASSISI CHURCH

The moment you arrive on the Island of Siquijor you will immediately see the Church of St. Francis of Assisi. Built-in 1774, the church was built with stone and has the usual crucible form of the old Spanish churches.  The décor inside was very minimal, limited only to a few hanging chandeliers, religious icons, and the ornate yellow tiles. Its walls and barrel ceiling are painted bare white with dark brown wood beams acting as trims. The old belfry was made of rubble stones stands independently farther from the church. The belfry can be found in the middle of the plaza, suggesting that it maintained a double purpose, a watchtower against Moro invaders.

How to Get to Siquijor

Siquijor is an island of the Philippines located in the Central Visayas between Cebu, Negros, Bohol, and Mindanao. Its capital is the municipality also named Siquijor and for now, it is the third smallest province in the country.

To get the Island the most common and used option is the ferry. There are connections from Cebu City (Cebu island), Dumaguete (Negros Island) or Tagbilaran (Bohol Island) among other cities.

Getting Around:

The moment you arrive at the port of Siquijor, you can visit the Tourism booth, they have fixed rates on Vans and  Tricycles to get you around the island.

Another cool option is the motorbike renting to explore the island by yourself. There are some shops for that in the main towns or in some accommodations as well. Usually, the best rates are offered for long rents but the average daily rate should be around 300/400P depending on the motorbike settings (automatic, manual, power, etc).
